El Mèdol is a Roman quarry which forms part of the historical ensemble of Tarragona, listed as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. Stone was quarried here two thousand years ago to build the city of Tarraco, the Roman empire's greatest urban centre on the Iberian peninsula.
Today, the Clot del Mèdol site is known not only for its historical importance, but also for its cultural and biotic value. Since acquiring it, the abertis corporation has taken responsibility for preserving El Mèdol and making it possible to visit this historic site, in co-operation with the city of Tarragona's museum of history.
